An energy-saving climate control system for electric cars

EU-funded project XERIC plans to develop a climate-control system for electric vehicles that can cut energy use by half. Reducing energy use would extend the range of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars, making the industry more competitive.

Range limitation is one of the major drawbacks of electric vehicles, mainly due to the restricted storage capacity of electric batteries. XERIC’s challenge is to extend the range of electric vehicles in all weather conditions by reducing the energy used for heating, cooling and dehumidifying the passenger cabin.
