InnovFin - EU Finance for Innovators: EUR 16.5 billion of investments into Europe's future in 2014-2015

At the launch of a new generation of financial instruments developed under Horizon 2020 - InnovFin - EU Finance for Innovators - in June 2014, the EU announced that it expected to trigger EUR 48 billion of investment into research and innovation over seven years' time.

In 2014-2015 alone, a total of EUR 16.5 billion of investments into the real economy was achieved thanks to the InnovFin debt products. The rapid uptake of the debt products confirms the enthusiasm amongst Europe's finest innovative entrepreneurs and their financiers to invest in Europe's future, through research, science and innovation.

At the current pace, it is expected that supply will not be able to follow demand. Hence, additional efforts to bring finance to innovation may need to be waged, on top of the efforts already committed to under the Investment Plan for Europe.

Less than two years after their launch, the debt instruments of InnovFin - EU Finance for Innovators have already triggered over one third of the projected total investments expected over the seven years of implementation under Horizon 2020.
