New building material lets in light but keeps out cold

Electric lights ensure Europe’s cities glisten and sparkle, with architectural wonders lit up for all to see . The downside to this permanent glow is the energy that the cities’ buildings consume. Construction materials, such as glass, regular concrete and steel, mean that buildings need heating, air conditioning and lighting.
